Practice Makes Perfect
Even though our Big Trip starts in August, for spring break we went to France for two weeks with a stopover in Iceland. We were in Paris for a week and then went to Royan, a smallish town outside of Bordeaux (Bore-doe, yes, I know it sounds weird) for a week, where we shared a house with friends. To finish it off, our family went to Parc Asterix, a French amusement park based on the comic books Asterix & Obelix, as the grand finale.
I have done a lot of traveling in my life, but this trip was one of my favorites because we got to see our friends in Paris and Royan. I had the best time ever with my friends Ella and Sophie, because seriously, what more could you want than to be in France with friends your age for TWO whole weeks?
Travel can be stressful (I’m sure my mom will agree) but the outcome was amazing. Some favorite points of the trip:
1. The food! Snails, croissants, crepes, and ice cream on sunny days. I got my friends to try escargot for the first time and I tried oysters for the first time, too. We got them in the market every day in Royan, along with cheese, baguettes and lots of other goodies.
2. Being with friends! Yes, Paris is so busy that you don’t always need friends, though they are appreciated, but in Royan, it’s such a quiet town that it would have been boring with no friends. We went to a big zoo, the beach and a cool old walled town called Brouage.
3. Sightseeing! Even though my family and I had been to Paris before, there were a lot of things that we had not done. I had only gone to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower, but I plucked up the courage to go to the top this time with my friends, and we had never gone to the Louvre, though we have now. Royan, Parc Asterix and the Blue Lagoon in Iceland were entirely new for us, so that was all fun. And we still have things on our list for our next visit, whenever that will be!
