One Hundred Days of Travel
In honor of making it to our 100th day of travel, we thought we would stop and add up some of our stats!
Countries visited: Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Dubai, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia
Mileage: 14,168 miles
Modes of transport: plane, ferry, car, metro, taxi, bus, bullet train, slow train, vaporetto, traghetto, funicular, tuktuk, motor boat, van and of course, lots and lots of walking
Where we’ve stayed: 40 nights in apartments, 2 nights on ferries, 2 nights on planes, 56 nights in hotels, homestays and guesthouses that have ranged from grotty to luxe
Favorite new foods: chickpeas in Barcelona, any type of Roman pizza, pappa al pomodoro, granita di cafe con panna, Turkish breakfasts, baklava, çimit, hoppers, kaya jam, Hainanese chicken rice, laksa, almost any Sri Lankan curry, kolo mee, golden rambutan (definitely NOT durian)
Some favorite experiences: tapas in the Mercat de la Boqueria, Salvador Dali Museum, all the gelato in Italy, testing the water spigots in Rome, Genoa v. Florence soccer game, Peggy Guggenheim Museum, our pool day in Santorini, cooking classes in Rome and Cappadocia, meeting the amazing ice cream man of Bodrum, visiting a Turkish hamam, silly dress-up photo shoot, dune bashing, Aquaventure, the train ride from Colombo to Kandy, watching elephants in Kaudulla National Park, Legoland, Cloud Forest biodome, KuraKura homestay in Borneo
Animal encounters: Asian elephants, jackals, peacocks, Hanuman langurs, blue whales, proboscis monkeys, flying foxes, fishing spiders, snakes, tarantulas, macaques (yuck!), colugo, Bornean bearded pigs, monitor lizards and hundreds of cats
Worst moment as a family: Dealing with the jerk of a customs guy in Turkey (the only unfriendly person in 3 weeks!) who told us we couldn’t fly out of Turkey to Dubai because our entry into Turkey had not been correctly recorded in their computer system
Worst moments as individuals: tummy bugs/motion sickness (Vance is the only one unaffected by this count, knock on wood)
Best piece of travel equipment (besides our iPads): quick dry everything, pack towels for the beach, the cord burrito, Steri-pen water sterilizing “magic wand”
Why did I bring this? Bananagrams. They’re heavy and no one wants to play with me. Also math fact flashcards.
What fun & you’re less than halfway! Durian is a right of passage. Grampie tried it and didn’t like it either. Hats off to Miles for giving it a try!!!!!!
Wow, I’m finally catching up with your blog. Your 100 days of travel stats are fantastic. Safe travels and love to all!
